Archeology Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on the recovery and examination of material evidence such as ruins, tools and pottery remaining from past human cultures in order to determine the history, customs and living habits of earlier civilizations.

Historical Research

Programs that conduct research which analyzes and interprets the past using a wide variety of sources which may include government and institutional records, newspapers and other periodicals, photographs, interviews, films and unpublished documents such as personal diaries and letters. Historians usually specialize in a country or region, a particular period, or a particular field such as social, intellectual, cultural, political or diplomatic history. Some may collect detailed information about individuals while others help study and preserve archival materials, artifacts and historic buildings and sites.

Political Science and Public Policy Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on the origin, development and operation of political systems and emerging issues relating to matters of public policy, governance and leadership. Research may relate to a wide range of subjects including international relations, the institutions and political life of nations, the politics of small towns or a major metropolis and the decisions of the judiciary. Studying topics such as public opinion, political decision making, ideology and public policy, political scientists analyze the structure and operation of governments as well as various political entities. Research methodologies might include public opinion surveys, analysis of election results, analysis of public documents or interviews with public officials.

Social and Cultural Studies

Programs that conduct research which focuses on the history, sociology, politics, culture and economics of a particular geographic region or a particular subset of the population which shares common characteristics, traits and customs.

Sociology Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on society and social behavior, the characteristics of social groups, organizations and institutions; the ways individuals are affected by each other and by the groups to which they belong; and the effect of social traits such as sex, age or race on a person's daily life. Sociologists examine the groups and social institutions people form, as well as various social, religious, political and business organizations. They also study the behavior of, and interaction among, groups; trace their origin and growth; and analyze the influence of group activities on individual members. The results of sociological research aid educators, lawmakers, administrators and others interested in resolving social problems and formulating public policy.
