Air Safety Standards

Programs that are responsible for developing and enforcing rules, regulations and minimum standards relating to the manufacture, operation and maintenance of aircraft as well as the rating and certification of flight personnel and the certification of airports serving air carriers.

Highway Safety Standards

Programs that are responsible for developing mandatory minimum safety standards for domestic and foreign motor vehicles sold within the country, establishing minimum fuel use limits for vehicles, supervising administration of maximum speed limits, developing safety and wear standards for tires, enforcing laws prohibiting tampering with vehicle odometers and other tasks associated with ensuring public safety on highways.

Marine Safety Standards

Programs that are responsible for developing and enforcing regulations that are designed to protect life and property on the nation's waterways; enforce compliance with safety standards; and investigate selected marine accidents. Included are navigation rules; standards that regulate and ensure commercial vessel safety, port safety and security, marine safety and environmental protection manufacture; and safety standards for recreational boats and boating-related equipment.

Motor Carrier Safety Standards

Programs that are responsible for developing mandatory minimum safety standards for large trucks and buses that are operated on a commercial basis with the objective of preventing fatalities and injuries involving these vehicles. The program develops, maintains and enforces regulations that promote carrier safety, industry productivity and new technologies; establishes safe operating requirements for commercial vehicle drivers, carriers, vehicles and vehicle equipment; works closely with other governments to ensure that motor carriers, drivers and vehicles meet the same safety standards as domestic carriers; compiles and disseminates safety data including state and national crash statistics, current analysis results and detailed motor carrier safety performance data; and implements safety educational strategies which target carriers, commercial drivers and the public.

Railroad Safety Standards

Programs that are responsible for establishing and enforcing standards for railroad track maintenance, equipment and operating practices; for investigating and reporting on railroad accidents; and for administering and enforcing laws and related regulations designed to promote safety on the railroads.
