Biopsies

Programs that establish the presence of a suspected malignancy or disease through the microscopic examination of a small piece of living tissue taken from the subject.

Breast Examinations

Programs that offer the screening procedure for the early detection of breast cancer which involves a manual examination of the breasts for lumps, thickening or other abnormalities.

Colorectal Cancer Detection

Programs that administer tests which determine whether an individual has colon or rectal cancer or polyps which may be precursors to cancer. Testing options include fecal occult blood testing which detects small traces of blood in the stool; flexible sigmoidoscopy which uses a lighted tube to visually examine the lower colon for polyps, inflammation or other irregularities; and colonoscopy, a procedure in which a long, flexible fiber optics viewing instrument (a colonoscope), is used to examine the inside of the entire colon. Fecal occult blood testing and sigmoidoscopy are screening devices. Colonoscopy is recommended if irregularities are noted using either of the two screening procedures.

Mammograms

Programs that offer the screening procedure for the early detection of breast cancer which involves an X-ray picture of the breast area which can be studied for abnormalities.

Pap Tests

Programs that conduct microscopic studies of tissue samples from the cervix or vagina as a means of early cancer detection in women.

Prostatic Specific Antigen Blood Tests

Programs that conduct laboratory tests to determine whether an individual's blood contains the antigen that is correlated with prostate cancer as a means for early detection of that condition. The blood test is recommended for all men age 40 and older.

Skin Screening

Programs that conduct skin screenings to detect early signs of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma or other abnormalities; or which evaluate the amount of sun damage an individual has received, often using a "black light" which shows layers of damage in different colors. People with suspicious skin lesions are referred for biopsies to determine whether cancer is present and for subsequent treatment, if required.
