Band Concerts

Organizations that offer music performances which feature an ensemble of musicians playing woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Also included are programs that arrange for band festivals and band competitions that are staged as public performances.

Big Band Music Concerts

Hotels with ballrooms, outdoor amphitheaters and other venues that offer music performances which feature big band music standards from the Swing era as well as new tunes in the Swing fashion. Patrons may have an opportunity to dance.

Blues Concerts

Organizations that offer musical performances which feature blues, an African American musical form whose roots stretch back to African musical and dance traditions. Blues emerged as a rural, acoustic tradition in the deep South in the late 1800's, later migrating to urban areas and adapting to electrical instruments. The blues forms the backbone of jazz, was a crucial influence on country and western music, and was the predominant force in the birth of rock and roll. Also included are programs that arrange for blues festivals and blues competitions that are staged as public performances.

Choral Music Performances

Organizations that offer music performances which feature choirs, gospel singers, barbershop quartets, glee clubs or other vocal groups. Also included are programs that arrange for choral music festivals or choral music competitions that are staged as public performances.

Classical Concerts

Organizations that offer musical performances which feature symphony orchestras, chamber groups or instrumental or vocal soloists or ensembles who play pieces whose style and structure are based on Western European traditions. Specific concerts may feature early medieval religious music that included masses and motets; suites and concertos from the baroque period; symphonies in sonata form and piano sonatas from the late 18th and 19th centuries; and pieces from the 20th century that are representative of serialism, neoclassicism, neoromanticism or other contemporary traditions. Also included are programs that arrange for classical music festivals and classical music competitions that are staged as public performances.

Country Concerts

Organizations that offer musical performances which feature the form of music that arose from many different traditions and which can be characterized today as country gospel, bluegrass, traditional country, contemporary country, western swing and hillbilly music. Also included are programs that arrange for country music festivals and country music competitions that are staged as public performances.

Ethnic Music Concerts

Organizations that offer musical performances which feature vocal and/or instrumental music from different cultures around the world that have long established folk traditions which are uniquely their own. Specific concerts may offer Brazilian music, Celtic music, Afro-pop, Bulgarian music, reggae or other similar forms. Also included are programs that arrange for ethnic music festivals and ethnic music competitions that are staged as public performances.

Folk Music Concerts

Organizations that offer musical performances which feature individual soloists and groups who play songs which often are a part of the oral tradition of different cultures including early America and frequently consist of poetry set to music with simple accompaniment, often by acoustic guitar. Folk music may include social protest content. Also included are programs that arrange for folk music festivals and folk music competitions that are staged as public performances.

Jazz Concerts

Organizations that offer musical performances which feature the uniquely American sound that developed around the turn of the century and includes Dixieland, ragtime, swing, be bop, jazz fusion, Latin jazz and other offshoots of a musical form that is, at heart, improvisational based on a song structure. Also included are programs that arrange for jazz festivals and jazz competitions that are staged as public performances.

Music Recitals

Organizations that offer individual performances by people, often pupils, who are demonstrating their vocal skills or their proficiency in playing a musical instrument.

New Age Music Concerts

Organizations that offer musical performances which feature a contemporary form of music that emerged in the 1980's which is characterized by harmony and consonance; lack of melody, rhythm or harsh shrill sounds; and the electro-acoustic enhancement of instrumental tones. New age music is primarily instrumental or may be accompanied by "positive consciousness" lyrics, and is often used in conjunction with meditation. Also included are programs that arrange for new age music festivals and new age music competitions that are staged as public performances.

Patriotic/Military Music Concerts

Organizations that offer music performances which feature patriotic compositions, songs associated with particular branches of the military, march tunes, and popular music with patriotic themes. Some concerts may be performed by military bands.

Rhythm and Blues Concerts

Organizations that offer musical performances which feature the forms of music that originated as African American popular music in the 1940's through to the 1960's and which today includes soul, funk, disco and other African American styles. The R&B sound combines rhythms from swing jazz with blues vocals and fuses big band jump blues of the 1940's with early rock and roll. Also included are rhythm and blues festivals and rhythm and blues competitions that are staged as public performances.

Rock Concerts

Organizations that offer musical performances which feature the form of music that arose from the rhythm and blues tradition and consists of songs that often are based on simple harmonic structures with a verse and refrain pattern which are accompanied by a wide variety of instruments but particularly guitar, base and drums. Associated forms include male and female rap, punk rock, heavy metal, pop and other similar sounds. Also included are rock festivals and rock music competitions that are staged as public performances.
