Business Plan Development

Programs that help nonprofit organizations, small businesses and other groups that are in the process of considering a new venture or restructuring current products and services develop a business plan which constitutes the combination of a marketing plan, a strategic plan, an operational/management plan and a financial plan. Business plans generally include an executive summary which states the purpose of the organization, its legal standing and the goals of the business plan; a description of the organization, its services, location, management structure, personnel, method of record keeping, insurance and security; an analysis of the market including an industry description and outlook, target market information, market test results, lead times, and an evaluation of the competition; financial documents including a summary of the organization's financial needs, a budget, a three-year projection, actual performance standards, balance sheet, income statement and financial history; and appendices for supporting documents, e.g., credit history (personal and business), resumes of key managers, letters of reference, contracts and other legal documents.

Organizational Capacity Building

Programs that provide support for organizations that need to develop core skills, capabilities and tools in key areas such as leadership, management, finance, fundraising and program planning and evaluation as a means of building the organization's effectiveness and sustainability. Capacity building is the process of assisting organizations to identify and address issues and gain the insights, knowledge and experience needed to solve problems and implement change. It is facilitated through provision of technical support activities including coaching, training, targeted technical assistance and resource networking.

Service Planning and Delivery Assistance

Programs that help nonprofit organizations and other groups conceptualize, implement and/or refine a plan for making any of a variety of human services available to the residents of the community. Included are organizations that provide assistance for groups that want to replicate an existing program, e.g., establish a new chapter of a support group, as well as those that specialize in generic program planning and development. Assistance may deal with defining general programmatic elements such as types of services, service modalities, target populations, eligibility criteria, application procedures, fees, language capabilities, accessibility for people with disabilities and funding; or may focus on a specific component such as intake, screening, diagnostic and assessment services, casework or other service provision, case management, record keeping and/or follow-up to ensure that the individual's needs have been met.

Strategic Planning

Programs that offer workshops or other forms of training which help nonprofit organizations, small businesses and other groups understand the basic principles of strategic planning; and/or lead key staff through a planning process in which they develop an organizational plan which has long and short-term goals, objectives, strategies, activities and tasks. Strategic planning helps an organization focus its energy, ensure that members of the organization are working toward common goals, assess and adjust the organization's direction in response to a changing environment and, overall, make fundamental decisions and take actions which determine what the organization is, what it does, and why it does it, with a focus on the future.
