Agricultural Pest Control Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on the application of scientific principles to the control of animal and weed infestation of domesticated plant populations including agricultural crops; the prevention/reduction of attendant economic loss; and the control of environmental pollution and degradation related to pest infestation and pest control measures.

Agronomy and Crop Sciences Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on the chemical, physical and biological relationships of crops and the soils that nurture them. Included are the study of the growth and behavior of agricultural crops, the development of new plant varieties and the scientific management of soils and nutrients for maximum plant nutrition, health and productivity.

Food Science Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on the application of biological, chemical and physical principles to the study of converting raw agricultural products into the processed forms suitable for direct human consumption, and the storage of such products.

Irrigation Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on developing efficient, economical and environmentally sound irrigation practices and systems for the use of water, energy and chemicals.

Poultry Science Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on the application of biological and chemical principles to the production and management of poultry and the production and handling of poultry products.

Soil Sciences Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on the scientific classification of soils, soil properties and their relationship to agricultural crops. Included are the study of soil chemistry, soil physics, soil biology, soil fertility, morphogenesis, mineralogy, hydrology, agronomy and soil conservation and management.

Sustainable Agriculture Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on developing and improving plant and animal production practices that will meet the basic needs of the current population for food, feed and other fiber products and sustain the economic viability of farming operations while preserving nonrenewable resources and the fertility of farmlands enabling future generations to flourish. Sustainable farming practices include crop rotation; alternative crops and livestock; low input production for local markets; targeted marketing of organically produced meats, vegetables and grains; community-supported agriculture; free range raising of poultry; and nutrient and pest management practices that reduce the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers and rely instead on resistant cultivars, timing of planting, use of compost and mulch, planting of cover crops, biological pest control and other alternatives.
